The Certification Process
The certification consists of 5 steps. The process to get certified can take a minimum of 3 weeks and as long as 3 months depending on when your completed application is received. Evaluations often fill up 4 weeks in advance and we frequently have a waiting list. Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis.
STEP 1: Application
We must have a separate application form for each individual. The application includes the following and will not be processed until all below items are received. We cannot hold spots for Evaluations if the application is incomplete.
STEP 2: Evaluation Test Prep Webinar
This is a live online presentation that reviews the evaluation test step by step.
STEP 3: Evaluation Test
The Pet Therapy Evaluation is a combination test of obedience, pet temperament and visit simulations. Each Evaluation test is generally 20-30 minutes long and certifies the handler with that specific pet only. If you wish to do visits with two or more dogs, you must pass the Evaluation test with each dog separately. If more than one person in the family wishes to do visits, they must each pass the evaluation with the animal. The Evaluation test is held in Morristown, NJ
Evaluation Test Overview
If you do not pass the Evaluation and are given the option to retest, you may do so in the three months following the failed Evaluation. Certification is valid for two years.
STEP 4: Orientation
This is a two-hour overview of what it means to be a CCPT team member and will prepare you for visits. This is held in Morristown, NJ.
STEP 5: Mentor Visit
Before you head out on your own, we will set you up with an experienced therapy team to help you through your first visit.
New teams will receive access to the webinar, evaluation, orientation, mentor visit; t-shirt, badges and certificate suitable for framing. CCPT insurance covers volunteer teams in good standing for visits at CCPT approved facilities ONLY.
New Team $100.00
Additional Family member with the same pet +$50.00
Additional pet +$25.00
Re-certification (every 2 years) $25.00
You will receive a full refund if you cancel more than one week before your scheduled evaluation date. No refunds will be given for cancellations within one week of your scheduled evaluation.
If you do not pass your evaluation and are invited to retest, you will be given the choice of retesting at a later date or a $25 refund.
