Volunteer Without a Pet

We are looking for volunteers to help with the evaluation of animals undergoing the certification process for therapy work. We welcome adults and children (who can sit quietly when needed and with adult supervision) to participate in the testing process.

Please note that we are not an animal rescue or shelter – we do not have animals at a central location. All pets belong to our volunteers. We also do not currently have a physical office location.

What To Expect

You will interact with the animals during simulated visit scenarios while evaluators observe the pet’s behavior and responses. Volunteers may be asked to use mobility aids such as a walker or wheelchair, approach the animal for petting individually or as a group, or create room noise to help assess how the animal responds in real-world therapy settings.

Details

  • Weekends in Madison, Succasunna, Rockaway, and Berkeley Heights.
  • Each test is about 2 hours. Longer tests will have two shifts.

I love pet therapy because I get to share the animals that bring me joy with other people. I get to hear their stories about their current and former pets, talk about different breeds and just have an easy conversation with folks I have never met.
